The United Nations Intergovernmental Cooperation for the Construction of Child-Friendly Cities is an international NGO dedicated to promoting the construction of child-friendly cities around the world, with the aim of creating a better and friendlier urban environment for children and promoting their healthy growth and comprehensive development.

I. Purpose

The core concept of the Organization is to be child-centered, fully respect the rights and needs of children, and advocate that urban planning and development should fully consider the interests of children. Its purpose is to promote global cities and communities to build an environment more suitable for the growth and development of children through international cooperation and policy guidance. Specific purposes include:

  1. Safeguarding children's rights: Ensure that children's basic rights are fully respected and protected in urban development and management, especially in education, health, safety, and participation.
  2. Promoting sustainable development: By building child-friendly cities, we aim to promote the sustainable development of cities, improve the quality of urban life and ensure the well-being of future generations.
  3. Advocating for social equity: Eliminate inequalities and discrimination faced by children in urban life, especially for vulnerable and marginalized groups of children, and ensure that all children have equal access to the fruits of urban development.
  4. Enhancing public participation: Promote the active participation of children and their families in urban planning and policy formulation, and improve the science and effectiveness of policies.

II. Main tasks

The United Nations Intergovernmental Cooperation for the Construction of Child-Friendly Cities is positioned to serve as an international platform to coordinate governments, local governments, municipal authorities and non-governmental organizations to promote the construction of child-friendly cities. Its main tasks include the following:

  1. Promote policy integration: Assist governments in integrating child-friendly concepts into national and local laws, regulations, and policy frameworks to ensure the protection of children's rights and interests in urban development.
  2. Promote public participation: Encourage and support governments and cities in various countries to listen to and incorporate the opinions and suggestions of children and their families in the process of policy formulation and project implementation, ensuring that policies and projects can effectively meet the needs of children.
  3. Strengthen cross-departmental cooperation: Promote cooperation between departments and institutions to ensure that policies and projects in education, health, social security, urban planning and other fields can be coordinated to jointly support the all-around development of children.
  4. Support local innovation: Encourage and support innovative practices of local governments and communities in the construction of child-friendly cities, provide necessary technical and financial support, and promote and replicate successful experiences.
  5. Enhance public awareness: Carry out extensive publicity and education activities to enhance public awareness and understanding of the concept of child-friendly cities, and mobilize all sectors of society to participate in and support the construction of child-friendly cities.

III. Main functions

The main functions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Cooperation for the Construction of Child-Friendly Cities cover policy formulation, technical support, supervision and evaluation, and knowledge-sharing, among others:

  1. Secretariat

The Secretariat is the executive agency of the United Nations Intergovernmental Cooperation for the Construction of Child-Friendly Cities, responsible for daily management and coordination. The Secretariat is led by the Executive Director and consists of multiple departments, including the Policy and Research Department, Technical Support Department, Supervision and Evaluation Department, Public Relations and Communication Department, etc.

  1. Regional representative office

The United Nations Intergovernmental Cooperation for the Construction of Child-Friendly Cities has multiple regional offices around the world, responsible for coordinating and supporting the construction of child-friendly cities in various regions. Each regional office is led by a regional director and staffed by policy, technical and program experts.V
